Skenara [Land Beyond the Sea] by SirInkman Skenara [Land Beyond the Sea] by SirInkman

A friend has suggested that I should start a Patreon account to produce more work for these sorts of game and story places.
Let me know what you think - would you be interested? What sort of things would you want to see? What would make that interesting for you?

Skenara, an ancient land beyond the sea... It rests southeast from the lands of Haldeshar over the Kohl Sea.

When the peoples of Simbral first came to these lands, they found them inhabited by crude beasts and dark secretive folk who dwelt in caves and in the stony grounds. The vegetation ruled the lands in all but a few scant places.

An old and powerful people had once called this land home, but few remained.
In places like Ygryn and Skar, or far to the south in Far Nyeshe, the lasy of Ylan weaved splendid magics and crafted arcane wonders in the hopes of undoing what they had done in ages past. The primeval lands grow over them, invested with strange forms and powers not of the natural world.

Thus the travellers form Simbral laid hands upon the land, to claim it and tame it to their purposes. Over many centuries it would seem they had succeeded. But forces once unleashed upon the TuAl, the wild woods, do not sleep. They creep, slow and steady, caring little of time and the ages of men.

Genereation after generation, the peoples of Skenara face the insidious crawl of the skagrafol and all the dark menace they bring. Great swathes of woodslands must often be burned to the ground to ensure that the blight does not spread.

Long ago the cities of Kida and Sekiz were lost to the dark fingers within the Zurinal. The blight threatens to spread even unto the very lands of Bhale.

Some folk believe that hope will come from Yleshe or Ylande. Others believe that the secrets lie hidden in some dusty ruin long since abandoned by the Ylan.

Others believe that a new power rises deep in Volanus, awakening fire and stone to roll against the the green plague; one day to return things to their natural order.

But an ancient thing sits north of Ragrinal who knows that none of these things are true. It waits, as it has for ages, to break the bones of mortal men and crumble their stone cities to rubble and dust under the throny touch of skeck.

This is a beautiful map.  Is it alright if I use it in my class to teach students about Why ancient civilizations developed near rivers and lakes?

Wonderful piece!  Stylistically it seems somewhat different from much of your other work.  The compass rose is my favorite element, great work on the design there.  The history behind the land is quite engaging as well.

This map is beautiful :) I adore the style.

I'd definitely support you on Patreon if you went that path. There's a variety of ways you could do it; some of the people I support offer tutorials, Patreon-only posts, invitations to suggest the next project, opportunity to request maps after a certain time period if donating at a specific level or above. I like them all but whether they work for you or not is up to you to decide.

I am going to have to create an account and familiarize myself with what options there are and all that.
I still haven't worked out what sort of path I would try to do.

I can well imagine. Can't have a map of a place without knowing who and what it is about!

I don't role play atm
I actually don't have the time and don't know anyone in this area.
I used to when I lived elsewhere. Mostly DnD.
Though in the past I had played Jorune, Talislanta, a smidgeon of Warhammer and some others.
I don't think Pathfinder was around at the time, or some of the other 'newer' ones [Exalted and such]

Well, I'd say that your time its darn well used doing maps, so... I'd rather have you doing maps that playing! :D

I have a 2 year old boy and my wife takes care of him pretty much 98.5% of the time, and even so I can barely find time to do maps, or anything else other that the dayjob and home chores...

Anyway, we do what we can, huh?

Beautiful map, John! :) Lots of lovely detail in there with all the settlements and landscape, though it's a little hard to appreciate fully at this size [but I am also on my phone, so...] If you start a Patreon account you should definitely post larger/higher res images of your beautiful works. ;)
Love all the little fishes, ships and sea dragons! :D Magnificent!
Are you planning to eventually do any extra pieces for the Sites or Ruins or Cities/Villages in this land? That would be cool to see some of them mapped and/or illustrated! ;D
Also.. really intriguing backstory! :)

Great map. However, I find it hard to distinguish on the map between the different types of shrubbery shown on the key.
I like that you put North on the bottom.

Thanks Arne :)
I can understand that.
I had to make a generalized representation for the legend and not all of the shrubland matches it as well.
There are also areas where the shrubland mixes with other types and can be harder to see.
