Back Stair Street by SirInkman Back Stair Street by SirInkman
original pencil drawing

The idea behind this illustration was the concept of a nice upscale old town where all the houses look so nice in the front. But in the back, on Back Stair Street the niceties of society were exposed as cracking dilapidated facades.
The time and place are relative. It could be some fantasy village or an 1800s era town.
I colored, textured and edited it later in PS

I think the tower on the right would be nice.
That big round window would be wonderful sit by and draw. :)

Hey John, I'm a terrible watcher, but once in a while I do go through my inbox...

I hadn't scene your architecture drawings before.  These are great.  Wonderful detail, and the intersecting lines and different heights make for a great composition.  You even have a door for Hobbits!

all of them are very good works. It would be interesting to see them in black ink and watercolor, or liquid watercolor :)

I have to be careful myself. I love spending a long time doing a lot of detail (that sometimes can't really be seen) but as an illustrator part of the job is trying to do your work faster and sacrificing some detail for speed.

I have a number of works that have not yet made it onto DA because the level of detail means that I am still working on them after several months.

I perfectly understand. It is the same as a designer: you are pushed to, well… we say "sfornare pizze" (to bake pizzas), that means to do something that works for the timing, the need and the budget, possibly as fast as you can and a reasonable price. I sometime treat myself some detail working that I see, but i try not to overwork, because it's barely paid.
But I still think that that perfectionism somewhat worths the price, even in crisis time.

I love this!  Very well executed!  I lived in Europe a number of years, so I can say that many of the front streets look like this too.  : )

Keep up the good work!

Yeah, it seems like my desire for detail and color don't mix as well as often as I'd like.
It often requires me to redraw for color.
I don't mind doing that but it is so time-consuming.

I know this is already in my favorites but I didn't take a closer look at this piece. I have to say a job well done on this. I really love the level of detail that was put in to this and how the rest of the environment fades out. Overall Well Done!!!

Thanks. I sometimes feel like I go too far on detail in some pieces, especially when it gets into PS for coloring and such.
