Artist's Cottage by SirInkman Artist's Cottage by SirInkman
Pencil on 11x14 sketch paper

More holiday pencil work. Just an imaginary home for an artist, fanciful yet practical with a quite large courtyard.
As I most often do, I started with the door and worked out from there.
I don't usually feel that the capture method [scanner or photo] really gets the subtleties of pencil. Oh well.
Wish I had a large format scanner. Or a better lighting setup for photographing artwork.
And here's the workshop behind the cottage as suggested.

Oh yeah, I can so quickly make myself home here :D Just needs some trees, or better still put it in a forest.

Yep, a forest would be a definite setting for this little cottage. :D

As would I. I hope to one day build a small house such as this with all the curves and character if I'm able.
It would be so nice to have such a big studio area. :)

Such a sweet dream! I hope you'll do it one day :)
I absolutelly agree! My studio is in my living room, and as my business grows, it's more and more hard to find place for everything I need *sigh*

Thanks Abdo. I do too. I think a lot of building has become too dull, too simplified because of cost savings.

right, it's all like tall shining boxes all around the city, but thanks to clever architects there's some variety from time to time
anyways, keep doing awesome stuff :)

So true. But hey, you live in a country with such great old and ancient buildings to see and visit. :)
I would love to be able to visit so many of those places only seen in photos. I will keep at Abdo. :D

This is lovely! It really only needs a second workshop for woodwork and framing, and a base hearth with wood stove for the chimney... And a side drawer in the coffee table for pencil and sketchbook. It is a wonderful little coffee table. :D

Yeah, I thought about that, as I do carpentry and other assorted craftwork. But I thought an artist is likely to only be able to afford so much for construction costs. But yes, that would be ideal.
Hey, maybe that is where that back pathway is leading to - some sort of barn workshop. Maybe I'll need to draw that one up when I get a chance. :)

This is a terrific little building, and definitely suited to the eccentric person who likes floral & dendriform. The shape of the house from the front is quirky enough to be lovable and feels very friendly, and I especially like how the door and window shapes are rounded. The hinges with the vine metalwork "holding" the door and gate are really sweet too. What's really nice is that this looks like it would be possible to build and have turn out well. Great job on the landscaping too, and I like the tables out front with the candle, reinforcing the idea of a simpler time. I wonder what's covered on the wider table though...

Yet between the multiple pipes in the chimney then – definitely – looking at the floor play it's just, well, terrific. I love open plan living, so merging the main living space and the kitchen is perfect. One guest room is enough. Oh, and if the weather permits the patio would probably be where you'd find me whenever I wasn't working.

The pencil work is top notch too, and I give you lots of props for doing such a terrific job bringing this to live as well. Thanks. :)

Now that is a comment.   #1
Wish I could favorite a comment.
The chimney is possibly confusing as it goes to a wood stove that I didn't draw in there since I didn't think anyone would know what is was supposed to be, just between the windows in the studio and the guest room. The second pipe was if there was a basement and a wood stove down there too.

Out in the front... it was supposed to be a little table [with coffee, of course ;) ] and a bench with an odd carved back rest. I wasn't sure if that would convey properly either.

I usually try to draw things that could be built, albeit with a lot of time and effort. I have done loads of renovation and carpentry over the years and am fairly familiar with what can be done, with enough money and effort. :D

My pleasure.

Oops, I missed the stylization of the bench back, and not seeing that there was coffee means that I'm way off my game. ;)

No need to draw in every small detail for a concept, no matter how much I'd love to see this for real. I figured there must be a basement for the furnace and hot water heater (if gas), etc. The only thing I see now is no convenient spot for a full-size refrigerator, but I guess some of the counter & cabinet space on the left could be cut for that. Sure, half-height units under the island counter would be sweet aesthetically, but I have a bad back so these things come to mind.

Anyway, thanks again and have a fantastic new year. :)

Haha, that's funny. When I drew the cabinets I was thinking of under counter fridge space.
You're very thorough. ;) I wondered if anyone would even think about that sort of thing. Question answered. :D
I really enjoy your thoroughness of thought.

I would love to as well.
If I could I would love to build communities for artists to live.
Unique little homes with studios and nice open work spaces.

So I dream up little places like this. ;)
